A load cell is a transducer which converts force into a measurable electrical output. This conversion is indirect and happens in two stages. Through a mechanical arrangement, the force being sensed deforms a strain gauge and through a mechanical arrangement, the force being sensed deforms a strain gauge. The strain gauge converts the deformation (strain) to electrical signals. Although there are many varieties of loadcells, strain gage based loadcells are the most commonly used type.
